ATTENTION ABC: Sarah Palin is interested in being on The View, the talk show that recently lost most of its panelists following the retirement of Barbara Walters. As far as we know, ABC hasn't actually asked Palin, who is currently doing a stint on something called the Sportsman Channel, to be on the show. But she is interested. "Hint hint hint," we're pretty sure Palin said mentally.
Here's the quote from Palin's interview with the Hollywood Reporter:
It'd be so much fun to shake it up taking on issues that make audiences objectively consider all sides, and I'd do it with my own real-life groundedness, candor and commonsense that I'm known for. Media needs that today, versus the condescension that oozes from TV and radio. I hear everyone recently got canned from The View, maybe a show like that needs a punch of reality and a voice of reason from America's heartland to knock some humble sense into their scripts. You know, someone willing to go rogue.
Notice the #smart #brand #engagement of that last line. Remember how Sarah Palin goes "rogue?" She would do it on The View! Good old Palin.
The important question is: how should we feel about this "news?" Even on a sunny day in Alaska, Palin's newsworthiness is questionable at best. But it is very easy to tune in (or click, hi!) on anything that bears her name and visage. Palin, like other divisive political figures, benefits from two distinct cults of personality: her devotees, and her hate watchers. When examining Palin's appeal as someone who says words on television, it is impossible to disentangle which of those two groups is more important.
Given, however, that ABC hasn't expressed an interest in having Palin join the only remaining View cast member next season — Whoopi Goldberg — it is extremely unlikely that Palin's pitch here will become reality. But if it did, it's important to note that The View hasn't previously shied away from throwing people into the mix seemingly just because of their ability to attract controversy. Unfortunately, Jenny McCarthy's short-lived run on the show already has an expiration date.
