President Obama is ruining the culture of the military by making Marines wear girly hats, the New York Post reports. "Thanks to a plan by President Obama to create a 'unisex' look for the Corps, officials are on the verge of swapping out the Marines’ iconic caps with a new hat that some have derided as so 'girly' that they would make the French blush," the Post's Jeane MacIntosh writes. Curiously, if you look at the photo above — the old style is on the left, the new style on the right — it appears it's actually the old hats that have more flair. We have annotated which is more girly to offer some clarity to confused civilians.

The Marine Corps Uniform Board is surveying Marines on potential updates to their uniforms, taking into consideration that combat roles will be available to women, according to a Marine Corps Times report (which makes no mention of Obama, but no matter). (Update: To be clear, the Post is incorrect in attributing the uniform changes to Obama, instead of the Marine Corps Uniform Board.) The new hat, one of the many proposed changes to the uniform to be met with strong opposition from Marines over the years, is supposed to look more flattering on women. It's called "the Dan Daly," after a World War I hero who was neither girly nor French. But that is the focus of the controversy.

A "senior Marine source" tells the Post that the new covers "look like women's hats!" And the tabloid cites a Marine Corps Times commenter saying, "The Dan Daly cap looks too French, and the last people we want to associate our Marines with would be the French military." This commenter is clearly unfamiliar with the wealth and variety of decorations on American service uniforms, as some units wear the French fourragère, a pretty little braid that goes on your shoulder. Girly is in the eye of the beholder.

Update: A reader sends along this image — he thinks it looks less "girly" when the cover is blue, not white:
