Let's imagine that Mitt Romney does win the presidency and that he selects Rick Santorum for some position of authority within it: We're guessing the U.S. Post Office is doomed.

Not that it's necessarily the Post Office's fault that a mailer from Santorum's campaign arrived in Iowa mailboxes on Monday, trashing Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate" and saying "it truly frightens me to think what’ll happen if Mitt Romney is the nominee." But blaming an already embattled public agency for a SNAFU would be a lot easier than admitting disorganization in Santorum's own campaign or, even more damaging to the opponent-turned-potential-running-mate, acknowledging he approved it anyway to needle Romney after dropping out of the race.

That latter possibility was one of the suggestions from Conservative Talk Radio host Steve Deace, which the Des Moines Register noted in its coverage of the zombie Santorum mailer. Deace said the Romney-bashing letter might be "an attempt to leverage more out of Romney by reminding him his base likes him less than they liked McCain." And there may just possibly be something to that. After all, Santorum declined to endorse Romney in a call with reporters Monday night.

The Register posted the Santorum letter in full for your perusal, but we've excerpted the best part below:
