Former White House adviser Elizabeth Warren is running for Senate in Massachusetts against Scott Brown, the Associated Press reports. Brown replaced Ted Kennedy in a special election early in 2010 that forecast Democrats' big losses in the midterm elections. Warren will announce her candidacy Wednesday, the Huffington Post's Sam Stein reports.
Liberals love Warren; when President Obama nominated Warren to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, her appointment drew thousands of signatures of support. But her nomination was withdrawn after conservatives vowed to block her confirmation in the Senate.
First Read notes she faces a tough primary and then a popular incumbent, but Democrats hope to make the race competitive. Warren has polled within nine points of Brown.
