This morning, Fort Lee, Virginia, was put on lockdown after an active shooter was spotted in one of the main buildings. The lockdown lasted about a half hour until the shooter was apprehended. The shooter, a female soldier, turned the weapon on herself around 9:00 a.m. She was immediately transported to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

Today at 4:21 p.m., Fort Lee officials offered a full statement to press explaining the situation further. The shooter, a soldier whose name is currently being withheld per Department of Defense policy, entered U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command Headquarters just before 9:00 a.m. with the gun. Guns are not allowed on the campus, concealed or open. She then "barricaded herself in an office with the weapon." It was at this time that the lockdown was issued.

Fort Lee police responded within two minutes. During their negotiations with the soldier, she shot herself.

The shooter was pronounced dead at the Medical Center. No one else was injured.
