Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and his wife jointly apologized in a press conference on Friday for "this situation that me and my wife were in," referring to a night that ended with her unconscious and Rice charged with third-degree aggravated assault.

Earlier this week, Rice pled not guilty to the charge and entered into a first-time offender program to clear his record. The press conference was live-tweeted by the official Ravens team account. There, both he and his now-wife Janay apologized for his alleged assault.

The "incident" refers to a February night in which Rice allegedly knocked his then-fiance unconscious at an Atlantic City casino. TMZ published video of Rice carrying her, limp, a few days after the incident.

Investigators originally charged both with simple assault, but then dropped her charge and elevated Ray Rice's soon after. But Janay Rice still took some blame for what occurred.

The press conference was "one of the most insanely un-self-aware," Deadspin writes, particularly this poor choice of metaphor.

ESPN's Mark Ennis summed up the crux of the problem.
