The man who covered himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire on the National Mall last week has been identified. Authorities do not yet know why John Constantino, 64, of Mount Laurel, New Jersey decided to commit such an act. He later died because of his wounds. Investigators attempts to contact friends and relatives did not immediately turn up any pertinent information.
Constantino doused himself with gasoline from a container shortly before 4:30 p.m. last Friday and lit himself on fire though the flames were quickly smothered out by passing joggers, and according to officials, the man was breathing at the time that he was airlifted to the hospital. According to the AP, one witness saw a man with a tripod shortly before the event who later disappeared before police arrived on the scene.
