An explosion around 6:40 p.m. on UC Berkeley's main campus forced an evacuation on Monday evening. The explosion followed a campus-wide power outage that had occurred approximately two hours earlier, which college officials suspect could be related to copper thefts from the electrical system.

Smoke was apparently coming from a backup generator near the college's Bancroft Library for about half an hour before the explosion occurred. A Berkeley student took footage of the large smoke cloud.

The campus was evacuated and all evening classes and lab operations were cancelled or shut down. IT services were down as well but as of 8:12, they are supposedly coming back online.
