Update (5 p.m. EDT): Doctors have decided Olsen needs surgery to relieve pressure on his brain from swelling, Olsen's roommate Keith Shannon told the Guardian. "It will happen in a day or two," Shannon said.

Original: Scott Olsen, a two-tour Iraq War Vet and now a critically-injured Oakland Occupier, is recovering. A nursing supervisor at the highland hospital in Oakland confirmed that Olsen was upgraded this morning to fair condition, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Olsen was in critical condition last night, and there were reports of Olsen suffering from a skull fracture. The Chronicle adds, "Keith Shannon, Olsen's roommate who served in Iraq with him, said doctors told him Wednesday night that Olsen was unconscious and breathing with the help of a respirator." Oakland police are still investigating the incident and maintain that they did not use flashbangs and rubber bullets on protesters, but Oakland police "released a statement that said they cannot speak for the actions of other law enforcement agencies on the scene," reports the Washington Post
