Does The Daily editor Jesse Angelo have a sense of humor to match his real estate sense? Is one-time CIA director James Woolsey preparing for a second career on the boards? Which makeup mogul said that thing about lazy women? Find out in today's Smart Set.
- Seagrams heir and Warner Music head Edgar Bronfman Jr. recently sold the famed Muppet Mansion at 117-119 East 69th St. in Manhattan to a mysterious buyer operating as Statler LLC — a reference to one of the heckling critics on The Muppet Show. The house, which Jim Henson purchased in 1977 for $600,000 and used as a studio to create many of the Muppets, fetched $28.5 million when Bronfman bought it in 2008. The new buyer, which the Observer posits is The Daily editor Jesse Angelo, paid $25 million. [NY Observer]
- Former CIA head James Woolsey may be appearing in the upcoming musical John Goldfarb, Please Come Home, based on the book and movie by William Peter Blatty. Fittingly, he would play a CIA director. Patrons of Elaine's in New York learned the news first hand when Woolsey joined musical comedians Michael Garin and Mardie Millit for a rendition of "That's Diplomacy," from the show. [Page Six]
- Aerin Lauder, grandaughter of makeup mogul Estee Lauder, was quoted in Sunday's New York Times: "Estee had this idea that there were no ugly women … just lazy women," but Gatecrasher points out that line actually originated with Helena Rubinstein, an early 20th century creams and powders purveyor. A Lauder spokeswoman said later: "Those words were said over and over by Mrs. Estee Lauder in her lifetime." Well, they did fit with her life's work. [Gatecrasher]
- After Natalie Portman's dance double claimed on Friday that 95 percent of the full-body dance shots in the film were her, director Darren Aronofsky on Monday roundly refuted that. He said in a statement: "There are 139 dance shots in the film. 111 are Natalie Portman untouched. 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math that's 75% Natalie Portman." Are we going to see a bitter, jealousy-fueled ballet feud linger around this movie? How self-fulfilling. [Gawker]
