The Israeli military shot down a Syrian drone that entered Israeli-controlled airspace over the Golan Heights, the Israel Defense Forces said Sunday.

According to the IDF's website, the unmanned aircraft was shot down with a Patriot surface-to-air missile. “The IDF will not tolerate a breach of the State of Israel’s sovereignty,” the IDF said in a statement on its website.

"We have repeatedly stated that we will respond to any breach of Israel's sovereignty and will continue to act to maintain safety and security," said IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner.

The IDF said the breach occurred near Quneitra, the site of heavy fighting the last several days between Syrian troops and rebels, but that it believes the drone entered Israeli airspace accidentally.

The IDF is assessing other potential measures it might have to take as Syria's civil war gets closer to its posts in the Golan Heights.
