Egypt's presumptive next presidential candidate Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has taken up something of a Joe the Plumber figure of his own on the campaign trail: an unnamed, middle-aged Egyptian woman who became a viral video star among Arab speakers after she said in an interview that she'd like President Obama to "shut up your mouth!"
She's sometimes called the "Shut up your mouse, Obama!" woman, because of her pronunciation of the word "mouth." Her rallying cry, "Sisi yes, Morsi no," gets at a popular conspiracy theory among Egyptians (and some Americans!) following the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood from Egyptian political life last summer: that President Obama supported the removal of former president Hosni Mubarak from office so that he could help bring a Muslim Brotherhood politician into power.
Her interview went viral in March, eventually producing its own dance remix. But as The National reported, the woman has since made appearances at campaign rallies for Sisi, the military-backed candidate who was more or less a given for the presidency even before he officially announced his campaign:
Now the woman – still unnamed – has become something of a political campaigner, appearing at pro-Sisi rallies and giving interviews in which she very solemnly talks about how the Muslim Brotherhood “is all liars” and urges Mr Obama to stop supporting them. Egyptians have taken her and her sometimes shaky grasp of English to their hearts, indulging rather than mocking her.
On Monday, the woman gave one such interview, where she said that the Muslim Brotherhood were all "liars," and asked Obama to renounce his support of the party. She once again repeated "Shut up your mouth, Obama," because it's now a catch phrase.
Egypt's next presidential elections will take place on the 26th and 27th of May.
