There's something perfectly fitting that goth-y teen icon Lorde will be, in her words, the "sole curator" of the soundtrack for Mockingjay - Part 1, the penultimate installment in the dark dystopian YA franchise.
USA Today's Brian Mansfield reported that the Grammy winner will have the first single from the film, and will be in charge of compiling the forthcoming companion album. "The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience," Lorde said. "I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people."
Lorde was featured on the soundtrack for Catching Fire with a cover of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," and her moody vibe certainly fits the style of the Suzanne Collins' series, which gets far darker in its final installment. (The book Mockingjay is being broken into two films.) T Bone Burnett produced the companion album for the inaugural film, which featured the Taylor Swift-Civil Wars song "Safe & Sound." Burnett's soundtrack ingeniously used a variety of folk or folk-influenced artists to allude to the fact that Katniss' home district is analogous to the Appalachia region.
