A game that seemed destined for penalty kicks, ended with a last-minute Argentina goal, two tantalizing, close-range misses by Switzerland, and a Swiss loss. In the end, Argentina bested Switzerland 1-0 in the knockout round.
Here was the extra-time goal, arriving in the 118th minute of a scoreless game. Argentine star Lionel Messi, who had been shut down all day, broke free at midfield before dishing a pass over to Angel Di Maria. Here's what happened next:
Messi just tied Mario Kempes with 4 assists at the World Cup. Only 2 Argentinians are ahead: Maradona (8) and Veron (5)— MisterChip (English) (@MisterChiping) July 1, 2014
The table already set for a heartbreaking loss, the Swiss squad made a run down the pitch in the last second of extra time. Blerim Dzemaili narrowly missed both a header off the post and then had a brief second to rebound his shot, which ricocheted off his knee and went wide left.
Pope Francis had received an Argentinian jersey during mass in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City earlier in the day. Though he pledged neutrality in the World Cup, that this header didn't go in seems like something of a miracle to us.
