There has been a bit of debate around the internet today about what does and does not constitute a good romantic comedy. This tends to happen when there are lists. But before we even get to the business of what's better and worse, it appears we need to first agree on terms.

The romantic comedy is not a genre that is awash with excess respect. This is a genre that came to be epitomized by When Harry Met Sally, a respected movie; Sleepless in Seattle, a less-respected movie; and You've Got Mail, a disrespected movie. What is generally understood to be a romantic comedy takes a light, airy tone and an unself-conscious approach to comedy, not to mention some degree of wish-fulfillment for the romance, even if that wish-fulfillment aspect is ridiculously out of touch with modern standards of gender equality. What a romantic comedy is not is a place for you to show off what super-cool cineaste you are.

If you feel like you're solid on these fundamentals, you're ready to take our quiz!

And then go watch My Best Friend's Wedding and improve your day already.
