After hanging in limbo, The Newsroom has officially been renewed for a third season—but that season will be its last

Up until this announcement, it was unclear whether Aaron Sorkin's tribute to the fake newsmen that cover real news that already happened would be back. Back at the end of August Kate Aurthur at BuzzFeed explained how peculiar it was that seven episodes into the second season HBO, known for quickly renewing shows, hadn't given it the go ahead. In early September, star Jeff Daniels tweeted that the third season of the show was a go, but that was not officially confirmed by HBO. The network told Aurthur: "We are excited about proceeding to a Season 3 and are continuing our conversations with Aaron about schedules."

So why wasn't the show renewed immediately? According to Lacey Rose of The Hollywood Reporter "hold-up has been creator Aaron Sorkin, who needed to pen the Steve Jobs film script before turning his attention back to Newsroom." AJ Marechal of Variety reported that Sorkin has turned in the script for the biopic.
