Scarlett Johansson's road to an Oscar nomination for her voice performance in Her will have a roadblock in the form of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Yes, according to Steve Pond at The Wrap, the HFPA confirmed that their rule that voice performances aren't eligible will stand. That means Johansson won't be able to even contend for one of the prizes often considered a stepping stone to Oscar glory, perhaps making the road ahead for her even harder than it already would have been considering the nature of her part in the film.
The Oscars, Pond reports, and the SAG Awards are okay with not actually seeing Johansson in a performance (though that's no guarantee they'll actually nominate her). In Spike Jonze's film she voices an operating system that Joaquin Phoenix's character falls for. Her work in the film has been praised for giving life to a character that could be, well, rather flat.
The nominations for the Globes will be out December 12.
