The steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art welcomed hordes of celebrities and possibly some punks on Monday night for the annual Costume Institue gala. The theme was, in fact, "punk," to the dismay of some, in conjunction with the museum's exhibit celebrating the style of the movement. We were eager to see which celebs went full Sid Vicious. (Anna Wintour, perhaps? No. Miley Cyrus? Yes.) In addition to fashion world regulars, some tabloid friendly couples were in attendance —Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn, and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian — and Beyoncé was an honorary co-chair. Vogue and the Met live-streamed the arrivals, and we live-posted photos of all the big looks and the stories behind them... when explicable. Re-live the red carpet below.

9:37 And we'll leave you with this photo of Sarah Jessica Parker, in all of her splendor. The dress is Giles Deacon. The plaid boots are Louboutins.

9:36 Claire Danes and husband Hugh Dancy.

9:28 Gwyneth Paltrow in hot pink Valentino. It has cut outs, but at least not side-butt cut outs.

9:24 Emma Watson and Jennifer Lopez via AP.

9:21 Jennifer Lawrence in tame Dior, with a 1940s-like veil. Not very punk, but quite lovely.

9:18 Kerry Washington in Vera Wang with purple streaks in her hair, apparently

9:16 And here's a better look at this Katy Perry thing. We can't even.

9:09 And here's the other tabloid-y couple: Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn.

9:03 Anne Hathaway with her blonde hair in her 1992 Valentino with Valentino.

8:56 Madonna, doing her Madonna thing, which, naturally, fits with the theme.

8:51 Nicki Minaj, Florence Welch, and Alicia Keys all via Reuters.

8:44 Kim Kardashian with Kanye West. Kardashian is wearing Riccardo Tisci, and is very pregnant and very flowery. She is also wearing gloves. (Update: Kanye ended up performing at the gala.)

8:36 Some more adventure from Olivia Wilde, Kirsten Dunst, and Emmy Rossum.

And Taylor's.

8:22 Well, that's it for the live stream. We're going to add more photos from the wire services as they come in.

8:19 Beyoncé alert. Beyoncé alert.

8:15 Chloë Sevigny.

8:13 Ashley Olsen.

8:10 And Anne Hathaway (with Valentino) is now a blonde!

(Photo via the Met)

8:09 Wow. Nicole Richie's hair.

(Photo via Reuters)

8:05 Katy Perry: "the original punk, like a Joan of Arc," she says. Perhaps we should direct her toward the Byzantine section of the museum in that Dolce get up.

8:01 The belt on Cameron Diaz, who is wearing Stella McCartney, looks like a weapon.

8:00 Solange Knowles.

7:56 Zachary Quinto went for some punk hair. Not very spock.

7:54 A look at Katie Holmes' Calvin Klein train.

7:51 Sarah Jessica Parker is wearing an insane Philip Treacy headdress. The rest of the outfit is also insane, we hope to get a full photo soon.

7:45 Vivienne Westwood, a designer featured in the exhibit, is wearing a pin to support Bradley Manning.

7:42 Lauren Santo Domingo in Dolce with giant sleeves and studded jewelry.

7:40 Psy, everyone's favorite party guest, said he was a little embarrassed because he went for a red checked jacket in honor of punk but hasn't seen that many people dressed on theme.

7:36 As for sort-of on theme, we love model Anja Rubik wearing Anthony Vaccarello.

7:31 While we're on the subject of teen idols, here's Miley Cyrus really embracing the theme in Marc Jacobs.

Ginnifer Goodwin also has a fauxhawk:

7:29 This is Taylor Swift doing punk. Insert "I Knew You Were Trouble" reference here.

7:25 Ivanka Trump has blue streaks in her hair and a stud necklace. So punk, Ivanka. So punk. What would Donald say?

7:21 Now we have Debbie Harry, an original punk, wearing—somewhat ironically—Tommy Hilfiger. "Tommy sometimes acts like a real punk," she said.

7:20 The Fanning girls are cooler than you in their Rodarte and adventurous eye make up.

7:16 Andre Leon Talley is very excited for the "urinal," he says on the live stream. (There's a replica of the CBGB bathroom in the exhibit.)

7:14 Amanda Seyfried (wearing Givenchy vintage) is here with Pedro Almodóvar. That's intriguing for movie fans.

7:08 Anna Wintour is looking very non-punk in floral Chanel. She told William Norwich on the live stream that the exhibit's curator told her color of punk was pink so that's what helped her make the decision. Okay, Anna. You do you.

7:00 The live stream is on, and Katie Holmes with high hair wearing white Calvin Klein was interviewed.

6:57 Hailee Steinfeld, reportedly wearing Donna Karan Atelier, also embraced safety pins for her otherwise quite clean-cut dress.

6:55 Linda Fargo of Bergdorf's really went all out on this, and for that we love her.

6:39 First safety pin sighting comes courtesy of the Met. Designer Zandra Rhodes:

6:24 Arrivals have begun. Co-chair Rooney Mara has seemed to go almost anti-punk with her pristine white Givenchy gown, but she added some edge with he lipstick. Here she poses with Riccardo Tisci, the creative director of that brand, who is also a co-chair.
