Just hours before their Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles, word leaked that the Washington Redskins had agreed to a five-year, $78 million contract extension ($40 million guaranteed) with quarterback Donovan McNabb. The move comes 15 days after Washington head coach and executive vice president Mike Shanahan benched McNabb (for Rex Grossman!) in the fourth quarter of the team's loss to the Lions, saying the quarterback lacked the "cardiovascular endurance" to lead the two-minute offense.

Twitter, understandably, was flummoxed by this latest development.

Been covering sports biz for a decade. Can't remember being more surprised over a contract than I was for McNabb's todayless than a minute ago via web

Big contract extension for McNabb. Redskins apparently didn't get memo you can no longer invest for future in DC.less than a minute ago via tGadget

Redskins still feel like the equivalent of a baseball team spending to get that 85th win.less than a minute ago via Seesmic Desktop
