Mark Haub gave hope to America's pudgy millions by losing an amazing 27 pounds in two months by eating nothing but the mysteriously delicious sweets found at your local 7-11: Twinkies, Doritos, those oily little powdered donuts, Diet Mountain Dew, and a multivitamin. He just made sure to eat only 1,800 calories a day of them. Will this mark a revolution in the country's multi-billion dollar diet industry?

Probably not. For one thing, Haub, a professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City, is not going so far as to recommend his diet to anyone, even though he not only lost weight, but also saw his good cholesterol go up, his bad cholesterol and triglycerides go down. He just wanted to show that calorie intake counts more than any other factor in weight loss, CNN's Madison Park reports. Still, some are taking the diet more seriously than others.

  • I Was Right and Liberals Were Wrong, Rush Limbaugh gloated on his radio show. “What have I told you about diet and exercise?  Exercise is irrelevant.  What matters in losing weight is what you eat, pure and simple, and how much, nothing more than that.  And everybody tries to tell me I'm wrong, that I don't know what I'm talking about.  And every time a story comes out on this I am validated, and nobody has ever said, 'Rush, you know, you were right about this.'" Limbaugh says he was certain he was right about diet and exercise all along. "One of the reasons I know what I know is that I know liberals, and I know liberals lie, and if Michelle Obama's gonna be out there ripping into ‘food desserts’ and saying, 'This is why people are fat,’ I know it's not true.  ‘Rush, do you really believe that? It's that simple to you, liberals lie?’  Yes, it is, folks.  Once you learn that, once you come to grips with that, once you accept that, the rest is easy.  Very, very simple.  Now, my doctor has never told me to restrict any intake of salt, but if he did, I wouldn't.  I'd just spend more time in the steam or the sauna sweating it out.  ... Well, you sweat it out, Snerdley. Absolutely right. ...  What do you think you're sweating, Snerdley?  Why do you think your dog wants to lick you when you've been sweating like crazy?  Or your cat, it doesn't matter."
  • Excellent Advice from Rush! Nitasha Tiku writes at Daily Intel. Like Limbaugh says, you can sweat out anything. “Same goes for pills. Those can be sweated out as well. If swallowing them gets to be a problem, try a Twinkie. No need to crush them up, just shove them into the creamy center, one gulp and down the gullet it goes. Wheee!"
  • More Anti-Obama than Pro-Twinkie, Ta-Nehisi Coates observes. “More than diet advice, this strikes me as a declaration of tribalism. It is a declaration of borders--'Whatever they are against, we're for.' Again, I doubt that Limbaugh believes what he's saying. I also doubt that his listeners believe it--Michelle Obama no more invented the idea of cutting back on sweets, then Limbaugh invented demagoguery. It's simply about resentment. There are people out there, for whatever reason, who resent the Obamas. Some of them don't know why, and others can't articulate why. Limbaugh gives them a speakable reason.”

Though he worries Haab may have lost a lot of muscle, since he didn't eat most protein, the case still shows there should be no snack tax. “One of the reasons I am against government regulating our food (taxing sodas, banning Happy Meals), other than the fact that they have no constitutional authority to do so, is that 'sin foods' don't cause obesity. Consuming more calories than you expend does. It's called the conservation of energy."
